What mother of young children isn’t in a hurry? Driving around town, preparing lunches, changing diapers, shopping and trying to exercise. Whether you work outside or inside of the home, chances are you’re looking for shortcuts when it comes to meals and snacks. Here are a few ideas to get your efficient juices flowing and lose weight in the process.

Quick Lunch Ideas:

Turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread with celery sticks

Tuna melt with sliced tomatoes on whole wheat bread

Bowl of tomato soup with a whole grain roll

Ready made salad and chicken breast strips

Whole wheat English muffin melt with tomato and cheese

Chicken salad stuffed in a hollowed-out green pepper

Vegetable quesadillas

Quick Snack Ideas:

Yogurt topped with granola and fruit

Bran muffin with apple slices

Brown rice cake topped with ricotta cheese, cinnamon and thinly sliced apple

Bell peppers and hummus

Light popcorn

Cottage cheese topped with peaches or strawberries

Celery with peanut butter or dressing

When you want to snack, you’ll reach for the food that’s easiest to eat. So wash and prepare your vegetables before you need them. At the next snack attack, you’ll be ready with cut celery sticks, snap peas, baby carrots or bell pepper strips. The same thing goes for fruit. A whole cantaloupe or watermelon remains uneaten, day after day. But once it’s sliced and ready to go, voila, it’s a delicious and easy snack. Slice up an apple and have it as a snack two hours after breakfast. Have a slice every few minutes to keep your desire for munchies at bay until lunchtime.

Yes, eating healthy involves more preparation than reaching for a bag of chips. But the payoff is well worth the effort. Your health will improve, you’ll lose weight, and your kids will have a great example of healthy eating. And remember, great choices don’t have to take an hour to prepare.

Today’s Action Step: What are some healthy snack and meal choices you will make today?

Greenhouse Ideas and Principles

Frost greenhouses are classically elegant, functional buildings. Manufactured by our craftsmen from the finest materials, they are designed to take pride of place as the beautiful centrepiece of your productive garden.

The greenhouse is the hub around which your garden world revolves. It is where your seedlings germinate and flourish in the warmth and protection of the greenhouse until the winter melts into spring and the seedlings become healthy young plants ready for their garden world outside. They make way for cropping plants. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, melons, aubergines and all manner of healthy and tasty fruits of the vegetable world.

Your greenhouse is also a wonderful place to be. Full of daylight, protected by the elements come wind, rain or shine it is full of the smell of plant life, moist compost and light. Make a space in it for yourself where you can sit and plan or daydream. Install a kettle and a radio and lose yourself for hours tending to your plants or lose yourself in blissful silence and peace.

The Frost Garden Glasshouse is not made of metal nor hateful plastic! It is timber, good wood which can take a nail and a bump from a passing wheelbarrow without being disfigured for life. In fact given time and the rigours of life I believe that a well used timber structure if looked after will look better and better as time passes.

I have been making conservatories and orangeries and all sorts of in-between structures for some time. What has interested me is not the architecture, important though that undoubtedly is. No, what has driven me on is the lifestyle which is imposed on us by the homes that we live in. What has inspired me about greenhouses after so much time spent on arguably ‘higher’ structures is that life is simple. Simple pleasures and simple truths are the strongest and most lasting. The most basic pleasures are about the surroundings we live in and the food that we live upon. The home is about much more than the house. The soul is the community and the shared experiences of the family. In the garden the greenhouse is the centre of production. What the greenhouse brings to the home is a self-sufficient core, a well of renewal, season after season, a hobby, a skill, a humbling lesson in how much we don’t know……!

The house merely enables a home to exist. It is the life within the home that defines family, comfort and support. Let’s create the best home which can be accommodated within the cartilage of the property. Let the rooms whose function is introverted be introverted. Let the rooms of rest be restful, let the purposeful rooms be purposeful. After all, a good workshop cannot have the same characteristics as a good snug!

The purpose, the function of a room should be defined and reflected in its characteristics. Sitting rooms are almost invariably introverted, facing inwards, facing the fire and nowadays the television which are the objects of interest together with the occupants of the armchairs and sofas which are invariably making the best circle available encompassing those central objects of intent.

The greenhouse as i can see it is the fountain of garden fecundity. Combined with a good set of composting bays converting waste vegetation into good fertiliser, it is a metaphor for renewable life. A healthy and natural cycle to life within harmony.

So what makes a good home, a good garden, a good greenhouse?

The Home. Enables its occupants to develop and express themselves in rooms. Whose characteristics suit their requirements, whose nature enhances their function.

The Garden. All the historic traditions of gardens reflect the time that they were created in. Where are they today? I would say in an age where we expect so much from everything. The garden is therefore ‘scenic’, providing a great view, easy on maintenance, (effort is at a premium) productive, (cost effectiveness in all) and green.

9 Alternate Ideas for Customary Cemetery Markers

When you think about a cemetery, what’s the first image you see in your mind?  More than likely it’s a picture of a sprawling, manicured expanse of acres cluttered with tombstones, statuary, follies, monuments and mausoleums.  It’s this rather Victorian image of the cemetery that pervades most images of the traditional final resting place.  In later years, some cemeteries have opted to remove the clutter and architecture afforded by headstones in favor of a more streamlined and modern look with metal or stone plaques flush with the ground.  Other specialized cemeteries prefer all graves to be marked with matching monuments—a line of identical crosses or Stars of David, etc.

Yes, there’s a certain nostalgia and comfort in these familiar images from the plinths and obelisks of the Victorian era to the Spartan look of the “modern” cemetery.

However, upon closer examination, what do we have?  We have stone which has been quarried from other areas and brought in at great expense.  The quarrying process strips perfectly good land, digging irreparable holes and caverns into earth which would be better used in other ways.  We have a landscape trenched by machinery which uses valuable petroleum, we have an earth filled with unnatural chemicals, an eco-system interrupted by concrete and plastic vaults designed to unnaturally elevate the land and keep the natural processes of erosion at bay.

In green burial, the land is often left to grow naturally—free of pesticides to control weeds, free of unnatural materials, free to grow and evolve as it was intended.  More often than not, graves for green burial are dug by hand, not by dangerous and expensive machinery.

As I have pointed out, the goal of eco-friendly burial is to preserve the earth, to give the body back to the land where it will serve as nutrition for the plants that grow on the Earth and the organisms that live below it.

So, in looking at a green cemetery in that light, it’s only proper that the monuments we leave to mark the place of a loved one’s burial should be equally natural and nondestructive.  Remember, a green burial is a celebration of life.

Of course, we can’t minimize the importance of having a marker on the grave—something to tell us “our loved one is buried here,” something to say, “We remember you.”

But, a monument doesn’t need to be costly stone—stone that was stolen from other land; it doesn’t have to be a bronze plaque rendered at great expense.  To truly celebrate life, the marker for the grave in a green burial is something enduring, something that wasn’t harmful to the earth, and, most importantly, something befitting the person buried beneath it.

Each green cemetery will have recommendations about what kinds of markers are acceptable.  However, here are some ideas of green markers and monuments that will serve as a lasting reminder of the life you are honoring.

1. A tree native to the area, planted in honor of the deceased, a tree that will be nourished by the loving gesture of returning the body to the Earth.

2. Native plants.

3. A rock or stone found on the site itself which has been engraved with the name of the deceased.

4. A plant that had a special meaning or symbolism for the deceased.

5. A tree stump or log found in the area, uprooted by nature itself which can be inscribed with the name of your loved one.

6. A marker made from re-claimed or salvaged wood which, in time, will also deteriorate.

7. A cluster or design made-up of small stones native to the area.

8. A natural-wood bird feeder made from reclaimed wood.

9. Nothing at all.

That last option may seem surprising, but many who are proponents of green burial would rather see nature take its course uninterrupted.  Simply knowing the general area in which their loved one is buried is enough for them.  They take comfort in seeing the land grow free and unencumbered.

Birthday Present Ideas For A 16 Year Old Boy?

alright so i need a present for my boyfriend, our birthdays are 12 days apart [september 3rd and 15th respectively, and i want to get him something from the heart (last year i got him custom guitar picks, its gonna be kinda hard to top that though)] so i honestly have no idea what to get him. I’m doing a mix cd where the songs are going to spell out “happy birthday” but that’s kind of like the little part of his present, i need to get him something bigger with more meaning. He plays guitar, likes sports (he plays baseball and basketball, hes a green bay packers fan and a chicago white sox fan if that helps) he’s really smart so he likes the discovery channel and watching other deep stuff that makes him think. For the 4th of july he gave me a necklace so that i have a little part of him to hold on to, i kind of want to do something like that but i dont know what to do. I was thinking about also getting him the history channel series “The Universe” because he would enjoy something thought provoking like that, but I kind of want to do something with more meaning. Any suggestions?
