This is a challenging hillside course. Tilden Park’s signature first hole is a 420-yard par 4, straight uphill to an elevated green. My father-in-law compared it to playing the Royal Course in Nepal. The 18 hole course was built in 1937 and designed by William P. Bell.

Three Top Costa del Sol Courses

Once host to the Spanish Open, its steep terrain, well-positioned water and sand hazards, and eight doglegs mean the 6409 yards course is technically challenging, especially if your tee-off shot is not accurate.
The three sets of 9 holes at the par 72 Almenara course, spectacularly sited around lakes with dramatic views of the Mediterranean, can be played in various combinations. The course is difficult in places, because of the lakes, undulating fairways, tight turns and deep bunkers, and buggies are recommended on the 6,800 yard course. If you stay at the Almenara Golf Hotel you get preferential rates on your green fees.
Scenery and skill on Gran Canaria
Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas, Spain’s oldest golf club, is set beside the crater of an extinct volcano, in the centre of the island. Narrow fairways and small greens mean you’ll need to be accurate on this par 71 course, and bring plenty of balls, since there are some deep ravines.
A Scenic Costa Brava Course
The par 73 Serres de Pals, with its mountain backdrop and local wildlife, is a highly rated, open, 6,780-yard course featuring fairway lakes and groves of pines. The greens are considered difficult. Designed by Ramon Espinosa this course is used by the PGA European Tour for their pre-qualifying tournaments.
A fine Costa de la Luz Course
Located on the ‘Marismas’ salt flats, beside the Ria Formosa estuary and the Atlantic Sea, the par 72 El Rompido South is a course that is both beautiful and easy to walk. Its wide variety of holes, make it suitable for golfers of all abilities, and you’ll have a chance to use most of your clubs on this 6,850-yard course.
Two Costa Blanca Courses
The home of several Spanish Opens, par 72, 6,653-yard El Saler was voted second best golf course in Europe by Golf World. Twelve holes are set among pine groves, while the other six are laid out, links style, through dunes.
Valencia’s most prestigious course, El Bosque, runs through peach and orange groves and is 6941 yards. The par 73 course has five lakes to get around or over and the dog legs can be challenging.
Two Majorca Courses
Golf Park Puntiró, a new par 71 course near Palma, is perfect for the higher handicapper. The Nicklaus designed course runs to 6,714 yards, and while some holes require accurate shotmaking, others are more suited to big hitters.
Par 72 Son Vida, although newly designed, is one of the oldest courses on the island. Its fast greens and tactically located bunkers complement the tree-lined fairways that include Mediterranean flora. Fine views over Palma Bay and Sierra Tramuntana can be had from this 5,829-yard course.

California’s Aviara golf club has been named as one of the best resort golf courses in America by both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine and offers a memorable coastal layout with a part 72, punctuated by colourful flora and fauna and stunning scenery. This Californian golf club really must be played to be believed!
The course was designed by Arnold Palmer and opened in 1991, providing 7,007 yards of rolling fairways and challenging bunker and water features. The biggest water ‘feature’ of all, of course, is the ocean view hole which provides an image you won’t forget – just make sure it doesn’t put you off your shot.
Pelican Hill
Although the golf resort at Pelican Hill opens in January next year, we already know it’s going to be very special. It’s a $1.3bn investment by one of the wealthiest men in the world. He’s recruited some of the finest hoteliers and spent fortunes on the facilities and bedrooms. We were very, very impressed during our pre-opening visit. The “perfected” two courses and superb clubhouse have been open for a year and the service, scenery and experience are remarkable.
Pelican Hill will definitely be a memorable addition to the best golf holidays in California. Pacific views, massive bedrooms, beyond state-of-the art facilities and gracious service…It’s a must.
As well as the qualities of the resort, what makes Pelican Hill golf club in California so great? There are two courses which instantly makes it twice as enjoyable and the classic Newport and Laguna Beaches are just down the road. Plus, Los Angeles is only 45 minutes away. Variety, quality, ease of access and very pretty golf…That’s great!
The Ocean North golf course is famous for the visual treat it presents golfers with. Not only is it set within 400 acres of stunning reserve but several of the holes run alongside the cliffs. The Ocean South matches the beauty of its ‘north cousin’ but is a more subtle challenge with with tricky bunkers, deceptive elevations and canyons all vying for your ball. Sensational USA golf.

In terms of sheer golfing brilliance in such a confined space, you can’t beat a stay at Pebble Beach. With three hotels and three world-class courses, it’s been rated at USA No.1 for many years and you can’t fault it. Spyglass is my favourite course, just beating the more famous Pebble Beach but Spanish Bay is also a beautiful links course…It’s a tremendous trio.
Pebble Beach Golf Links: opened in 1919, has hosted numerous competitions, including the US Open several times and is consistently voted No. 1 Public course in America by Golf Digest.
Another Californian golf course honoured by Golf Digest is Spyglass Hill. The unusual name of the course is matched by the names of some of the holes – all based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Treasure Island’ – “Black Dog” and “Billy Bones” being two examples. Opened in 1966, this difficult course changes its terrain at the drop of a hat. While the first five holes are characterised by sandy seaside dunes, the remaining 14 suddenly require you to cut through pines and elevated greens. Although it is rated as a Par 72, the stroke average during the 1999 US Amateur competition was over 79 so be ready to play Stableford and swallow your pride. Finally, the Links at Spanish Bay is a course that could almost be in Scotland (were it not for the outstanding weather!) – even with sandy wasteland, bristly grasses and a strong ocean breeze, it’s an enjoyable challenge that rarely becomes frustrating.
And if you want even more, there’s Poppy Hills, Cordevalle and Pasatiempo (all in the US Top 100) within an hour. Simply beyond world-class golfing breaks.
Pebble Beach also wins thanks to the charms of Carmel and the easy-going beaches and great, great weather. The food is delicious and very, very fresh. All in all, a golf holiday in California offers a quality change from the European game. Next time you’re considering a golfing break abroad, you have to consider America’s sunshine coast…And why not go for a couple of weeks and tour all three or my recommendations?

Walt Disney World Resort itself boasts five championship golf courses: Osprey Ridge, Palm, Magnolia, Eagle Pines and Lake Buena Vista. Western Algarve golf breaks
Besides bustling Albufeira, there is the charming old town of Lagos, set on one of the largest bays in the Algarve. Its 17th-century fort stands at the harbour entrance and a new marina with rows of excellent restaurants and bars draws the crowds. Quinta do Lago is a premier golfing destination. Two of its four excellent 18-hole courses are listed among the Europe’s top 25 golf courses, and half of the 2000-acre resort comprises a residential and recreational estate, surrounded by pine forests. This beautiful area is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Ria Formosa nature reserve. Nearby is a large shopping centre with a health club, nightclubs and restaurants, and scenic countryside runs along miles of secluded beaches.
Just 20 minutes’ drive from Faro International Airport, Vilamoura is one of Europe’s largest sport and leisure complexes. There are five golf courses, championship tennis courts, an acclaimed riding school, and fishing and shooting facilities. The resort’s large marina has many fine restaurants, cafes and shops.

There are many hotels not far from the airport, close to some well-designed courses. Tavira, at the mouth of the River Gilao, is a fishing port dating from Moorish times. Nearby you’ll find Reserva do Sapal, one of Portugal’s most important nature reserves. And just across the border, on the Costa de la Luz, are many more great golf courses.
