Lake Champlain – 5 Ways To Enjoy This Great Lake

Lake Champlain is the largest body of fresh water in the U.S. after the Great Lakes, and at 120 miles in length and an average depth of 400′ and 12 miles across, everything about it is impressive. But more impressive than its size is its unspoiled beauty. In a state already known for conservation and back-to-nature vacations, Lake Champlain is the secret destination for a growing number of New England vacationers.

Here’s my pick of five destinations and attractions in the Lake Champlain region when you visit…

ISLAND HOPING VERMONT STYLE:

The northern half of Lake Champlain contains a wonderful patchwork of Islands. The largest of the Islands are interconnected with each other and the Vermont mainland by Route 2 in the south and Route 78 in the north. Following Route 2 from south to north will take you through the picturesque towns of South Hero, Grand Isle, North Hero, and Alburg just a few miles from the Canadian border.

The Lake Champlain Islands’ terrain is flat to gentle rolling hills, which means bicycling is a popular way to get around on vacation. In most areas you’ll have unobstructed views of Vermont’s Green Mountains to the east, and New York’s Adirondacks to the west.

BURLINGTON – LAKE CHAMPLAIN’S CITY

Though Montpelier is the state capital of Vermont, its largest city is Burlington, which sits on the shore of Lake Champlain, with the stunning backdrop to the east of the Green Mountains.

Activities in Burlington include ECHO, Vermont’s world-class lake aquarium and science center on the waterfront, Lake Champlain Chocolates guided factory tour, where you can see these famous chocolates made right before your eyes, and The Ethan Allen Homestead and Museum. Complete your day with a train ride through the beautiful Champlain Valley on the Green Mountain Railroad. The train meanders through gently rolling green pastures to Shelburne and back.

CRUISES ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN

Two cruise boats operate on Lake Champlain in the summer – “The Spirit of Ethan Allen III” accommodates 500 people and the “Northern Lights” has room for 150 guests. Both these boats leave from the docks in Burlington.

While cruising you’ll listen as tour guides discuss the Lake Champlain region’s rich revolutionary past, the importance of the Native Americans of this area, and interesting facts about the Lake. But center stage on either cruise is the stunning views of the Islands and the surrounding mountains of Vermont and New York.

DIVING FOR WRECKS

If diving for wrecks is your passion then in Lake Champlain you’ve come to the right place. The Lake is considered by many divers to have the best collection of historic shipwrecks in North America.

Eight of these wrecks are preserved for the enjoyment of divers, and under the watchful eye of the Lake Champlain Underwater Historic Preserve. These wrecks offer a unique experience for northeast diving. The types of wrecks vary from a horse ferry to canal boats, with some located close to both the Vermont and New York shorelines of the Lake. Diving experience required ranges from beginner to advance.

For more information on these wrecks visit the Preserve’s site at www.lcmm.org.

LAKE CHAMPLAIN MARITIME MUSEUM

The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum is located near Vergennes, and is a marvelous way to experience the historical significance of the lake. The museum at Basin Harbor provides opportunities to step back in time as you explore a Revolutionary War gunboat, watch craftsmen use traditional shipbuilding skills, and learn about nautical life in the Champlain Valley during the conflicts of the 18th century.

The Museum is self-guided but has plenty of demonstrations for you to stop and view as you wander around.

STATE PARKS ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN

There are over 50 State Parks in Vermont, and the Lake Champlain area contains twelve of those state parks, and includes: Alburg Dunes, Knight Point, Sandy Bar, Burton Island, Grand Isle, Knight Island, North Hero, and Woods Island in the Lake Champlain Island chain. Other state parks on the Lake’s shore are: Kill Kare, Kingsland Bay, Button Bay, and DAR.

Within these Vermont State Parks are opportunities for hiking, biking, camping, boating, fishing, picnicking, and swimming. The parks are a wonderful way to relax and enjoy the waters of the Lake for a day or longer, and to hike trails in between a swim and reading your novel.

Enjoy Christmas on a Beach – Karon Beach in Phuket

Surfing Santas

If you’ve been to places like Bondi beach, you won’t be surprised to find a pot bellied Santa dressed in his red coat, full beard surfing the waves down on the coasts of Sydney, Australia. This is about as far as it goes for the Australian Beach Xmas, sure there are a few beach parties but nothing of the level you will find in places like Thailand for example-and they aren’t even Christians! Fortunately for the sake of entertainment, having a great time anytime is not restricted to certain religions, for the fun loving Thais it’s any excuse for a party and off they go big time.

If you are staying down at the Karon Beach resorts-you won’t be disappointed in the celebrations that go on.  Approximately two weeks of full-on Christmas and New Year beach parties, hotel parties, beach barbies, you name it and something is there for you.

About Karon Beach Resorts and Phuket

One thing that stands out around the beach resorts of places like Karon in Phuket is the extent of the island’s lush vegetation and greenery. Over sixty percent of the island is lauded with lush forests, rubber and oil plantations.  The popular beach resorts like Karon lie on the West coast, while its mountain range stretches North to South-the highest point being Mai Thao Sip Song (The Twelve Cains) at 529m above sea level.

Phuket is the largest island in Thailand, its population is around 320, 000 and has a land area of 543 square km (approx the same size as Singapore).  It is also known as the Pearl of Andaman due to its beautiful pearl shape and unique colours. It is located on the southern coast of Thailand and boasts some of the most beautiful palm fringed beaches in the world.

Merry Christmas from the Karon Beach Resort

One of Phuket’s main tourist attractions is of course, the beautiful beaches and golden or white sands that stretch North to South. Picturesque palm coves and bays inundate the coastline where some of the most elegant and luxurious hotel resorts blend in to combine natural beauty with modern resortism. Karon beach, a short distance south of the main Patong beach spans 6 km of coastline and is famous for its beautiful white sands which make that unique squeak as you walk. Favoured by couples, families and the young, Karon beach heralds the Horizon Karon Beach Resort and Spa located at the south end of the beach and just a stone’s throw from other idyllic beaches. The resort is set on 16000 sqm of land, is surrounded by a forest vegetation of lush green and is slightly elevated which provides a marvellous little alcove of peace and tranquillity. The Karon Beach Resort and Spa will also be having their own Christmas and New Year’s celebrations and of course the beach parties and barbies will go on all night, every night, as if they have always been a part of Thai tradition!

See you there folks-out for now.

For a different kind of celebration head for the Karon Beach Resort and Spas, Phuket. See the homepage of Horizon Karon Beach Resort and Spa for great deals and more on the Karon resort

Enjoy Florida’s Culturally Diverse Food

Florida’s Gulf and Atlantic coasts and its inland waters serve up a mouth-watering menu of marine cuisine. Depending on the time of year and where you are, you can dine on Apalachicola oysters, Fernandina Beach shrimp, St. Johns River blue crabs, Florida Bay lobsters, and Cedar Key clams, Grouper, mahi-mahi, largemouth bass, speckled perch, and trout.

For Starters – here are a few;

Conch Chowder – a creamy soup made with conch (a giant sea snail). Conch live in those shells that some of you buy in souvenir shops, take back home, put it to your ear and think that you can hear the ocean.

The two most common ways conch is prepared is in chowder or fried.

U-Peel-Shrimp

This is a dish consisting of shrimp cooked in a spicy broth.

Some Main Course dishes

Seared Tuna may be served with a mango salsa and grilled chayote (a type of squash). For the mango salsa; Fresh mangoes are blended with herbs, spices and scotch bonnet peppers for mild heat.

Chicken Tropicana This is a chicken dish with tropical fruit sauce, coconut and cashews. Dessert.

Key Lime Pie – you cannot mention Florida desserts without mentioning this Florida Signature dessert.

Key Lime Pie is filled with a tangy custard made from Key lime juice, sweetened condensed milk, eggs, and sugar. The pie is named after the small Key limes that are found throughout the Florida Keys.

Key lime juice is yellow, not green – so if it is green it is not authentic. To sample a day’s worth of Cuban delights (Cuban cuisine is a fusion of Spanish, African and Caribbean cuisine), begin at breakfast with a wedge of hot, buttered, Cuban bread with a cup of caf

é con leche — this is strong coffee with a some milk.

Other choices include frijoles negros (black beans), arroz con pollo (chicken and yellow rice), boliche (a beef roast, stuffed with chorizo sausage), Cuban mojo-roast pork, arroz salteado (salted rice), and deviled crab with hot sauce. Feast your eyes and stomach on a heaping dish of paella — rice mixed with a profuse amount of delights that may include mussels, clams, shrimp, scallops, lobster, oysters, stone-crab claws, chicken, and/or pork.

To finish off, try flan, egg custard oozing with caramel sauce. Then go back to your Florida Vacation Rental Home and have a well earned rest.

Bundle Up and Enjoy a Fall Football Road Trip

READY with your Road Trip Planner? SET up your itinerary…you could choose a HUT HUT HUT, but I’d recommend a hotel. HIKE up the stairs and claim your ticketed seat and watch some LIVE FOOTBALL!

I’m a 49ER fan and don’t need a road trip planner to drive the 37 miles to Candlestick Park in San Francisco to watch my men in red & gold. I didn’t go to their Superbowl games either because I always held a huge party at home with TVs in every room (including the bathrooms). And when their 5-time winning streak ended & the 49ers slipped on their Astroturf, I turned to Fantasy Football.

But now I’m thinking maybe it’s time to enter the next level of Football Fandom. I use my trusty road trip planner to plan my summer vacations, weekend getaways, anniversary trips, family gatherings, even my girlfriend getaways…why not a Football Road Trip?

AWAY GAMES: It would be a blast to go on a road trip to cheer my team on against one of their historical rivals. In my case, it would mean traveling to St. Louis, Missouri to battle the Rams, which would actually be a great road trip choice because I could stay with family there & could bunk with them. Plus, St. Louis is a great destination offering many things to do. So check your own team’s schedules; a football road trip may be the perfect excuse to visit a city you’ve always wanted to explore anyway. Here’s your chance to visit the homes of the Seattle Seahawks, the Philadelphia Eagles, or the Miami Dolphins.

YOUR FAVORITE TEAM IS IN ANOTHER STATE: I’m within one hour’s drive of my team’s home field but I have friends whose favorite teams are the Dallas Cowboys or the Green Bay Packers (go figure). It’s lonely to shout out your team’s name in a sea of opposite-minded fans. Or be the only Cheesehead in your section. So plan a road trip there and be surrounded by fans who will actually return a High-5 when your team scores.

SPECIAL FOOTBALL DESTINATIONS: Actually, now that I think on it, I’m not restricted to just my team’s away games. I could use my road trip planner to plot out my route to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Canton, Ohio. Or visit the home city of the ONLY OTHER two 5-Time Superbowl Champions, Dallas or Pittsburgh (sorry, couldn’t resist that little nod to the 49er Glory Days).

SPECIAL EVENT GAMES: A group of friends, or a football-oriented family like my own would have a great time planning a road trip to one of the following events:
* The Super Bowl XLIII will be in Tampa Bay, Florida on February 1, 2009
* The 2009 Pro Bowl is in Honolulu, Hawaii on February 8, 2009

FOR THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL ENTHUSIASTS: Do your road trip planning around these events:
* 2009 Rose Bowl is in Pasadena, California, on January 1, 2009
* 2009 Orange Bowl is at the Dolphin Stadium in Miami, Florida on January 1, 2009
* 2009 Sugar Bowl is at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans on January 2, 2009
* 2009 Fiesta Bowl will be at the University of Phoenix Stadium (a $450 million state-of-the-art complex ) in Glendale, Arizona on January 5, 2009
* 2009 BCS Championship Game will be held in Miami, Florida on January 8, 2009

All this talk of football road trips is revving me up! In fact, I’m making a commitment right here and now. If the 49ers make it back to the Superbowl again, wherever it is, I’ll use my road trip planner to get me there. Ready, set, hut, hut, hike!

Enjoy the Only Boutique Hotel in the Hilton Arsenal of Properties

I wanted to see the Hilton Auckland after their suite refurbishment, and it was well worth the visit. The popular Bow Suites, so named because they are shaped like the bow of a ship, overlooking the Waitemata Harbour, have had quite the face lift.

The interior, designed by Catherine Stormont of HBO&EMTD, is contemporary in feel, blending in with the overall design of the hotel which has been dubbed the “New Hilton” in its embrace of sleek lines and minimalist decor, interspersed with traditional Mauri artistic accents. There is a sense of being in the Presidential cabin of a luxury international cruise liner, and its proximity in the harbor, with cruise ships arriving and departing below your terrace, adds to that feeling.

Furnishings and fabrics are muted tones, “decked” out with Italian leather furniture. The Presidential suite has two plasma televisions, dining for four, a work desk and credenza, a chaise and side table over looking the wrap around deck, wrap around couch with chaise angle, an outdoor lounge area and eating area, huge bathroom with separate bath, rain shower, and toilet, floor to ceiling glass doors with water views from every single angle, electronic shades, and wispy white transparent curtains to mute the suns raise, but allow in the reflections of the sea.

The artists’ glass sculpture and vases that graced my room, included locals Simon Kaan, Graham Fletcher, and Heather Straka. Part of the upgrade included the concept that every space should have a touch of authenticity. Amenities have also been upgraded to the Crabtree & Evelyn “la Source” range, an improvement over past choices.

Hilton Auckland stands 300 meters from the city center adjacent to the Viaduct Harbor. It was officially opened by the Prime Minister, Helen Clark, in June 2001 and is situated on the northeast corner of Princes Wharf. There are 160 deluxe rooms and six suites. Not a “small” hotel, but it does have the feel of a boutique hotel. In 2005 it was named the Top New Zealand CBD Hotel of the Year.

White Restaurant, and Bellini, the lobby lounge bar, have been created by Dan Kwan of Tribeca, the design firm based in Singapore. His intent was to provide an environment that would be a white canvas for Executive Chef Bernard Bernabe to paint his culinary palate, and to be a minimalist setting for the hues of blue and green of the bay reflecting through the floor to ceiling windows.

Bernard Bernabe, even the name is a mouthful, was born in the Philippines. His family immigrated to New Zealand when he was nine years old. Now, at the ripe age of 28, he was the driving force behind the award winning team when white was honored with the Restaurant of the Year award in 2004.

General Manager, John Ingram is a soft-spoken gentle man with a lot to say. He treated me to details about the local cultural community and life in Auckland, as well as his the importance for the global hospitality community to see this Hilton in its rightful light, a “new Hilton” as he called it. With 160 deluxe rooms and six suites, one can hardly call this a boutique hotel, yet I agree with him that it has that feel. Staff is very professional and ingratiating, food is superb, and the atmosphere modern and light.

My favorite feature of the hotel is a glass-fronted swimming pool that juts out in such a way that with goggles under water, you have the illusion of swimming out to sea.

Why Can’t These Haters Just Let People Be Happy And Enjoy A Holiday?

During the past week, ADF attorneys have offered to defend free of charge two cities in Wisconsin that faced legal action from the secularist Freedom from Religion Foundation (FRF) if those governments did not remove nativity scenes from their public holiday displays.
In Green Bay, City Council President Chad Fradette – acting as a private citizen – received permission from Mayor Jim Schmitt to place a nativity scene on one of the overhangs at the entrance to City Hall, McCaleb stated.
And officials in Peshtigo allowed private businesses or individuals to place displays for the holiday at Triangle Park, a small municipal park in that city, he said. The holiday display included a nativity scene placed by the Chamber of Commerce, as well as displays of Christmas trees, reindeer, Santa Claus and a rescue squad car.
