Falling In Love On Holidays To Cyprus

There’s every possibility that you’ll fall in love on holidays to Cyprus. Not only because the island is so stunning, but because it is believed to be the birthplace of the Greek goddess of love; Aphrodite. Cyprus lies just south of Turkey, at the junction of Africa, Asia and Europe, it is the third largest Mediterranean island and has a wonderful year round climate; often seeing summer temperatures hit 40°.

Cyprus has a rich and colourful history and it was around 3,000 years ago that the first Greek settlers arrived. The Egyptians and Persians followed and then under the Romans the island was one of the first to convert to Christianity. By the end of the 19th century Cyprus came under British rule due to its strategic importance. Having won its independence in 1960 Cyprus remained under self-rule until Turkey invaded and took over the north of the island in 1974,  the island has found itself divided between the Turks and Greeks ever since.

Flights to the north of the island usually have to land in Turkey first and then continue on to Ercan, although you can fly into the south and travel north. Depending on which part of the island you are visiting to the south you will fly into either Larnaca or Paphos airports. Flying into Paphos to the west of the island, you would normally be visiting resorts such as Paphos itself or the beautiful Coral Bay. Larnaca to the east would take you to Ayia Napa and Protaras, while the resort of Limassol can be reached easily from either airport.

One of the biggest attractions of holidays to Cyprus is the beautiful beaches with some of the best found in Limassol, Coral Bay and Protaras. Ayia Napa offers a wonderful array of water sports and has a nightlife renowned worldwide for its energy and international D.J.’s. Paphos is the perfect destination on holidays to Cyprus if you are wanting to explore the islands culture, history and traditions. Here you can visit sites such as the House of Dionysos and the Tombs of the Kings, with the Baths of Aphrodite just along the coast. Commonly known as Upper and Lower Paphos, the Upper area offers history unbounded while Lower Paphos is fast rivalling Ayia Napa for the islands party crown.

Cyprus is a lush and fertile island and offers many nature trails and walks for keen hikers to enjoy. The Troodos Mountains offer a stunning backdrop to western Cyprus and can lose you in a world of days gone by. Hidden villages pop out from the fragrant pine forests which also hide crumbling remote monasteries, and glorious byzantine churches. In the winter months you may even be able to enjoy a spot of skiing in the Troodos Mountains while the climate remains mild along the Mediterranean coastline. The Akamas National Park is one of the most beautiful places to witness unspoilt natural beauty on holidays to Cyprus. And there is also an important breeding site for turtles at Lara Bay, home to the endangered Green and Hawks-bill species.

So even if you don’t actually fall in love yourself while on holidays to Cyprus, we’re pretty certain you’ll fall in love with the island itself.
