Mauritius – Places to Go, Things to Do

The busy life of today has taken the fun out of living. Long working hours, meetings, and appointments make life dull and boring. Such a life is similar to that of a machine, with the sole difference being that machines have no feelings.

Therefore, one must take some time off from work to relax those overworked nerves, and take some time to enjoy life with one’s friends and family. What better way to relax than a vacation on an island with the ones we hold near and dear?

Mauritius is one such island fit for the purpose of rest and relaxation. There are many tourist attractions in Mauritius, and since its independence in 1968 the government of Mauritius has stressed the tourism trade to promote their country, and moreover make it a piece of heaven on earth.

Natural beauty is one of the main features of the Island. There are tons of attractions and sights, including beaches, parks, hotels, and gardens, worth seeing in Mauritius. A few examples of these spectacular places are listed below.

One of the best attractions in Mauritius is the Royal Botanical Gardens of Pamplemousses. They are famous for their immense beauty and collection of exotic plants. Mauritius had been under the control of the French, British, and Portuguese, and this garden dates back to the French period. The Casela Bird Park is home to more than 140 species of birds, and is an excellent place to visit for nature lovers.

Another awesome place to visit in Mauritius is the Grand Bay. It had been one of the earliest tourist attractions, probably because of its natural beauty and captivating sights. It features many water sports, such as scuba diving and parasailing. Submarine ventures are also a good attraction for many tourists, as one gets to explore the great underwater life. The restaurants, shopping malls, and clubs in the vicinity are also great places to visit.

Another favourite nature spot for many tourists is the Chamarel. It is one of the unique features of Mauritius, and consists of a landscape in different coloured patches of red, blue, yellow, and green earth. These patches are considered to be the result of weathering, and are an attraction for many who visit the island.

Water activities are at their best in Mauritius. Fishing and diving are also two of the main attractions to the Island. Deep sea fishing is a highly adventurous and exciting sport, and is highly recommended to anyone planning a trip to the Island. Diving, another highly acclaimed attraction of Mauritius, is popular due to its coral reefs. The scenery itself is spectacular and the experience is worth every penny spent.

If shopping and dining are your main interests, then the waterfront is the best place to visit. The craft market here features local crafts, as well as crafts from neighbouring countries. Curepipe is one of the best places to shop for designer products.

L’Aventure Du Sucre Museum is a great place to spend an afternoon exploring the history of Mauritius. It features the history, from the time of slavery to its independence, and is thus both fun and educational by all means. The structure was originally a sugar factory established in 1797. The factory was converted into a museum after the cessation of trade in 1999.

On Location Nov 07 – Kenya

It is seven years since my last in depth visit to Kenya and I was pleasantly surprised by the high standard of accommodation.

I started my trip in Nairobi at the House of Waine, where the staff are charming and it is the perfect antidote to an international flight. I also went to see the giraffes at the nearby Giraffe Centre and went to some beautiful shops where I bought some wonderful local bags and belts.

The following morning I flew up to Meru, to Elsa’s Kopje, which is set on a kopje (hill) in a stunning area. Here I went for a walk with my tracker Francis and later visited a local Boran Village, which is not a tribe that I have come across at close quarters before.

I then flew in a private charter to Shaba, to Joy’s Camp, which overlooks an underground spring and hence the surrounds are lush and green. This is a new camp and the ‘joy’ of Joy’s Camp is that there are no other camps nearby so you have game drives to yourself. I was told that it was possible to go and visit (as a Guinea Pig) a local salt mining operation. The drive was around two hours and as we walked over the hill we came across a beautiful crater, with cows and goats being taken down to water. The ‘miners’, mostly women, were old and wizened working in harsh conditions mining salt. At first they were somewhat suspicious of us but eventually, we soon ended up getting on and having quite a laugh.

From Joy’s I flew, again in a private charter, to Laikipia, where I stayed at Sabuk. Run by Verity, an old Kenyan hand who has spent her life working as a guide, many of Sabuk’s staff have been there for over 30 years. I went camel riding, had a surprise breakfast in the bush and went to visit a local Samburu village, which is only visited by guests of Sabuk, so it wasn’t touristy and the fact that the Samburu carried on dancing after the “tourists” had left was great to see.

I was then driven a short way to Loisaba, which although nearby to Sabuk, offers many different experiences and has completely different views. Here I went quad biking alongside zebra, went walking (practically running to keep up) with a Samburu warrior, visited the local nursery school, was lucky enough to go hot air ballooning and slept out under the stars on the ‘star beds’.

After Laikipia I was flown down to the Mara, where I stayed at Saruni, which is run by a charming Italian, Riccardo, who spent many holidays in Kenya and loved it so much that he decided to set up his own lodge. I stayed at Cottars 1920s, where another guest flew in, with his pilot in his helicopter. We got chatting over dinner and I was invited to go on a helicopter safari the following morning, over the Mara, the Serengeti and the Migration! We also popped down onto a mountain for morning coffee! After Cottars I went to Naibor, where I had some fantastic game viewing, although there were too many vehicles for my liking.

After lots of great game viewing it was time to fly from the Mara, back to Nairobi Wilson and then on to Lamu, where I was collected by boat and taken to Manda Bay, which really is the perfect ending to a safari. A visit to Lamu town and Shela are a must as you get a real feel for the local culture.

I ended my trip at Shompole, which is on the edge of Lake Natron. This is serious luxury and again is a perfect start or end to any safari. Every room has a private plunge pool and stunning views. Game viewing is on offer, as it a visit to Lake Natron, which was full of thousands of pink flamingoes. I also visited a local village, which was purely one man, his two wives and their nine children. They were all so welcoming, so friendly and so happy, although they only lived in incredibly basic huts.

A Romantic Beach Resort in Negril

A great all inclusive hotel in Jamaica situated beachfront in Negril, across the coastal road from a beach called Bloody Bay is Sunset at the Palms.

With only 86 rooms and not costing top dollar this is the kind of place that is very suitable for an affordable family vacation. There is a relaxed atmosphere here, boutique hotel in style, with even a touch of the South Pacific about it.

This is because of the design of the accommodation units which are small wooden cottages at most two stories high, but sitting Asia style on stilts.

Each of them has two bedrooms, and a balcony, four poster beds, and a shower only bathroom. This includes air conditioning and a fan, but no mosquito nets, and bug spray would probably be a good idea.

They are essentially quite simply furnished with dark wood furniture, but very stylish, and the whole set up lends itself to it being a very romantic hotel, and has won awards as the most romantic hotel in this part of the world.

All Inclusive Hotel Food does have a reputation of becoming somewhat boring after a couple of weeks, but the head chef at All Inclusive Hotel has his own TV show on Jamaica television. Breakfast has a great selection, as well as freshly cooked eggs and omelettes. There are two restaurants, and the Palm Grove has buffets where there is a huge selection of dishes, every day with a different theme. It is very well worthwhile arriving early because not everything is replenished. The A La Carte Restaurant, the Lotus Leaf is very good, but you should be aware that dress code rules apply and are enforced. By the way the menu changes every week, and not to forget that there is a beach grill for burgers, sandwiches, and jerk chicken, which is open all day.

Don’t miss the beach BBQ on a Friday, complete with limbo dancing and fire walking

There are two bars at the hotel itself, a swim up at the pool and one by the a la carte restaurant, and a third bar at the beach. You will find the barmen very helpful, and willing, and keen to get you to try a variety of cocktails which should probably carry a health warning.

The beach, although across a road, is beautiful, a classic Caribbean white sand, with warm blue, green, turquoise sea. There are plenty of sun loungers so no need to bring a pile of books and clothes to do the reserving bit before breakfast.

Most people use the beach, even although the small pool is nice it is rarely crowded for that reason, but you will enjoy the hot tub for a lovely soak after partaking of one or more of the good selection of watersports off the beach.

Whilst there is entertainment it is done in a refined and tasteful way, which isn’t always the case at an all inclusive hotel in Jamaica. The staff are friendly, professional, eager to please, and they will chat as well given a chance.
All in all the Sunset at the Palms is a small boutique romantic hotel with great potential to also give you a great affordable all inclusive family vacation at a great beach resort in Negril.
